Why is London one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world?

Thursday, 26 July 2012

There is no doubt that London is an incredibly popular destination for visitors from across the globe. Along with other mega metropolises such as New York, Paris and Berlin, the city witnesses huge numbers of visitors throughout the year.

All are keen to experience a location that boasts an incredible history, exciting cultural events and a diverse number of smaller neighbourhoods, each with their own special identity and flavour – but what is it about London that makes it such an immensely popular tourist destination? Why do people continue to flock here in ever-increasing numbers?

Culture

One of the most important reasons London is, and will continue to be, a popular destination for tourists is the incredibly large range of cultural attractions available. Boasting some of the most prestigious museums and art galleries in the world, London provides an interesting and immersive look at the history and culture of the United Kingdom and its role in relation to other cultures across the globe.

The importance of these London attractions to the tourism industry has been highlighted by figures published by the BBC, which show an estimated 5.8 million visitors made a trip to the British Museum last year, while there was also a 6% rise in visitors to free cultural attractions.

Accessibility

The ease of access to such attractions is another popular reason to visit the city. There are also a huge range of things to do in London that involve just immersing yourself in the local culture. Whether it’s hanging out in Hyde Park and enjoying a picnic with friends, or indulging in a few drinks in any number of the traditional British pubs found throughout the city, embracing the electric atmosphere of London’s busy streets is an experience in itself.

The city is also a fantastic location from which to visit a number of other locations around the country.

Transport

London is also seen as a brilliant tourist destination due to its expansive and well-organised public transport system. With easy access to any location across the city granted by the London Underground and buses, all of which can be used at better rates if bought in conjunction with a London travel card, London is a city that makes itself easy to enjoy.

This is vital to ensure an enjoyable stay for many visitors. A city as large and sprawling as London is difficult to traverse without such infrastructure and organisation.

Finally, London has recognised its role as a tourist destination hot spot and local authorities and businesses have made a concerted effort to ensure that the needs of holidaymakers are met.

This can be seen in the widespread availability of the London Pass, which gives visitors access to over 55 top London attractions at a considerably reduced rate.
