FOUR students from the Abbey Grammar School have picked up awards at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in Dublin's RDS.
Year 10 pupils Sean Lane and Cormac Rea were the only students in the north to be awarded a first prize for their project Correcting Behaviour In Woodlouse in the biological and ecological junior category, facing competition from 1,200 other students from 221 schools.
As part of the four month research period the students used a forced turn in a woodlouse maze followed by a turn in the opposite direction.
The study was found to be instrumental in preventing the woodlouse moving in a circular pattern and allowing forward movement which was vital for their survival.
Ronan Marley and Ryan Savage picked up the display award for their technology project Willing To Brake The Mould?
The students created an innovative product that provides an informed visual representation of a motorists braking manoeuvre, enabling the driver to respond in a more informed and controlled manner.
Brian O'Mara of the judging panel said he was very impressed the boys' very clear and articulate presentation and encouraged the boys to continue developing their prototype, which a number of major car manufacturers have expressed interest in.
Colm O'Neill, CEO, BT Ireland said: "The passion and enthusiasm we have seen from the students taking part the exhibition has been outstanding.
“This year's exhibition was bigger and better than ever before and the reaction from the students, teachers and visitors to the RDS was amazing.
“We live in a continually changing world and what we have seen from the students during the exhibition is that they have the foresight and innovation to come up with real problem solving ideas that can help Northern Ireland to grow and develop into the future.
“Huge congratulations to all the winners and I look forward to watching their progress in the coming years," he added.
