City escapes snow downpour thumbnailPRINCIPAL Bernard Kennedy gets to work on Monday morning clearing the snow for his pupils at St Malachy’s PS, Ballymoyer, Whitecross.

NEWRY was braced for blizzards over the weekend as forecasts warned that snow was about to engulf it.
Somehow the city escaped the avalanche that had been expected. Other parts of the district, however, were transformed into a winter wonderland as had been predicted.
The whiteout was in rural areas of south Down and south Armagh in particular. And, while the snow did create some scenic scenes - as captured here by Democrat snapper Noel Moan - walkers needed to be well wrapped-up against the elements and drivers were urged to take extra care on the slippery roads as thermometers plunged.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland Electricity has revealed that 8,700 of its Newry District customers suffered power cuts, with emergency teams having to be flown by helicopter into the Mournes on Saturday to repair damaged power lines.
