£12M HOTEL JOBS BOOST
Tuesday, 13 August 2013
A MULTI-MILLION pound hotel is to be built in Newry - creating scores of new jobs in the city.
The £12m hotel - understood to be a Premier Inn - will be located on the Downshire Road at what was once the the site of former tyre dealership, ATS.
As well as the hotel itself, the 22, 000 sq ft project will include an office development, landscaping and car parking.
Confirming his endorsement of the 120-bed hotel, recently instated Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan described it as "a significant development scheme which will provide a real boost for the city and the surrounding area for many years".
“This is good news for Newry," he said.
“It will create jobs during the development and construction phases, with more local jobs in the long term.
“The new hotel will benefit tourism potential, providing accommodation in an area that is the gateway to the Mourne Mountains. The additional office accommodation will also offer more choice for the business community.
“What I and DoE are about is creating a better environment and a stronger economy. The decision to approve this hotel will help do that."
The applicants behind the project are Merit Investments and Properties Ltd, part of the Magherafelt-based Conway Group, which has worked on a number of high profile developments including Premier Inn sites Derry and Lisburn.
Confirmation from DoE brings to an end years of uncertainty over the scheme, which was submitted to planners in July 2009 and has been repeatedly turned down, most recently in September last year. Only one objection was registered to the application this time round.
