MP SLAMS PARADES PLAN
Tuesday, 20 August 2013
SINN Fein MP Conor Murphy has launched a scathing attack on Willie Frazer after the victims campaigner confirmed he is pressing ahead with plans to hold controversial parades at Narrow Water and Whitecross.
Mr Frazer told the Democrat he will be submitting applications to the Parades Commissions this week for the two parades in direct response to a recent republican parade in Co Tyrone.
The south Armagh loyalist admitted that a parade through the nationalist village would raise tensions in the area but said the parade is designed to highlight "victims' concerns".
He said a separate parade outside Warrenpoint is to remember 18 para-troopers killed by the IRA at Narrow Water in 1979.
However, MP Conor Murphy slammed the parade proposals as a publicity stunt: "Willie Frazer's reprehensible behaviour during the flag protests has led to him being arrested twice."
“His so called victims group, FAIR, has had its funding revoked and recouped by the SEUPB, his 2006 Love Ulster rally led to days of serious rioting in Dublin, he has previously claimed that the IRA were responsible for the horse meat scandal.
“Clearly he is a fantasist whose every action is designed to court publicity."
Last year Mr Frazer applied to the Parades Commission to parade through Whitecross in memory of 10 Protestant workmen killed by republicans at Kingsmill in 1976.
Against a backdrop of opposition to the parade from residents in the village, restrictions were placed on the parade including limited numbers.
The parade however was cancelled at the last minute after a relative of one of the Kingsmill victims died.
Mr Murphy said there will be opposition to the latest parade: "Frazer first proposed a parade through Whitecross in February 2012. At this time there was a massive groundswell of public revulsion at his plan to march through Whitecross village, past the homes of seven members of the Reavey family.
“Whitecross is an overwhelmingly nationalist village and the residents' opposition to Willie Frazer's plans were well outlined at that time.
“I will stand with the community of Whitecross against this parade."
