Bright future for Meaney... with a chance of showers along the way

BURREN native Frank Mitchel is Northern Ireland's most recognisable Weather Man - but a Newry store manager is giving him a run for his money after his Facebook weather report page became an instant online hit.
Kieran Meaney launched the Meaney's Weather Updates page just four weeks ago and already has over 700 followers with his weather updates reaching over 10,000 people each week.
The online page gives readers daily weather updates specifically for the Newry and Mourne area as well as interjecting a little bit of humour and appearances at random locations, including Tanglewood Music Festival and more recently Slane Castle.
The page also includes constantly updated weather photos from the area and gives readers a platform to ask Kieran for advice on the weather outlook for various parts of Newry and Mourne and further afield.
“I've always been interested in the weather - almost obsessed," Kieran told the Democrat.
“I had this idea about a year ago and I thought I would put it together and keep people informed of what the weather is like, because if you're watching the BBC News weather report you get a generic report; you don't get a local report, so what I'm putting up in Facebook is exactly what's happening above our heads."
Kieran is constantly studying weather charts and weather radars for his updates, and to add a bit of humour to the site, he has taken on board Blues sidekick Jarlath Mulholland and rising actor Tony Smith to help out.
He added: "We throw a bit of comedy in to it for a laugh; if you're doing the normal weather reports every time then it becomes bland and people are bored, so it's a mixture of weather and humour."
To date the page has reached over 10,000 people's Facebook timelines and has a weekly reach of 14,500 people - and Kieran's hoping the page will go from strength-to-strength.
And when asked if we could eventually see him on our TV screens doing the news weather updates, he modestly replied: "Yes."
