Rapist awaits sentence
Tuesday, 17 September 2013
A CROSSMAGLEN man has admitted raping and robbing a girl he lured into his car with the promise of a lift home.
Padraig O'Callaghan of Monog Road and his accomplice, Brendan Treanor - whose address has been listed variously as, Dowdallshill, Dundalk, Cortreasla Road, Crossmaglen and, most recently, Mourneview, Cladymore, Armagh - offered their victim a lift after she become separated from her friends following a night out on December 11, 2011.
But instead of being taken home, the young woman was driven from Sugar Island to Talbot Street, where Treanor got out and waited while O'Callaghan raped her - an attack that continued even after Treanor got back into the vehicle.
The victim was then driven to Stream Street, where Treanor dragged her from the car onto the road before she was put back into the car again and driven to North Street, where she and her handbag - which had been emptied of its contents - were thrown out.
Both men initially denied any involvement, with O'Callaghan claiming on arrest that he'd never met the victim - despite his DNA being found on her body.
Shortly before his first court appearance, O'Callaghan's girlfriend of 15 months surrendered a mobile phone to police which was subsequently confirmed as having belonged to the victim. The 22-year-old then changed his story, claiming he and the victim had consensual sex.
But at his latest court appearance O'Callaghan entered guilty pleas to charges of rape and theft. A charge of false imprisonment has been left on the books.
Treanor meanwhile, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. Three counts against him - rape, false imprisonment and robbery - have been left on the books.
A pre-sentence report has now been ordered on 25-year-old Treanor, who is on continuing bail, while O'Callaghan remains behind bars having repeatedly failed to secure bail.
Both men will return to Newry Crown Court on October 11 for sentencing.
