POLICE officers in south Armagh have extended their thanks to a member of the public who helped detain one of two men suspected of burgling an elderly woman's home.
At around 4.30pm on Friday, October 4, police received a report of a burglary at the home of an elderly woman in the Blaney Road area of Newtownhamilton.
When they arrived at the scene they found one suspect being detained by a local man while another was arrested nearby.
Both suspects, a 15-year-old boy and a 28-year-old man, were taken into custody and are helping police with their enquiries.
South Armagh Neighbourhood Inspector Lorraine Dobson extended her thanks to the man for his help.
“I would like to convey my thanks to the member of the public who assisted my officers this afternoon," she said.
“His quick thinking and brave actions, along with the timely response from local officers, has resulted in the apprehension of two suspects in an incident where the home of an elderly lady has been targeted."
Fews councillor Jimmy McCreesh commended the man on his bravery.
“This was a truly heroic, selfless act and testament to the community spirit alive in south Armagh," he said.
“Across south Armagh we have a number of Community Safety Groups that look out for people and their property but even in areas where these groups aren't strong it's heartening to see that neighbours are still looking out for each other.
“I would encourage everybody, particularly those living in rural areas, to keep an eye out for their neighbours and contact the police if they see anything suspicious."
