'Point donations for Philippines

A WARRENPOINT business has turned a request for a donation into a major aid shipment for those affected by the recent natural disaster in the Philippines.
JY Hygiene Supplies, a small local company which supplies nursing home equipment and medical supplies across Northern Ireland, has sent a container of medical aid and non-perishable food to the stricken country.
The generous gesture was made possible with the help of donations from other businesses - Bunzl Healthcare, Camsing Foods, Hendersons, HPC Healthline, Kilmorey Care, G. Cunningham Haulage and BM Polyco - as well as a food collection organised by Carrick Primary and St Patrick's Primary.
Gavin Garvey, Manager of JY Hygiene Supplies, said the firm decided to act after being approached by a customer, who is married to a girl from one of the affected areas in the Philippines. "He asked if we could donate something as they were collecting old clothes and food supplies to send to the Philippines," he said.
“We offered to make a collection on their behalf and within a short time we realised that we were going to have more than a pallet or two, so we decided to aim towards sending a container.
“This added considerable cost to the project but when we spoke to our shipping agent, Heyn Handling Solutions, they very generously offered to absorb the entire cost of the shipment. The generosity of people and businesses alike has been overwhelming and we have been able to collect around £50,000 worth of supplies to send."
The container departed Belfast docks on Sunday (December 15) and will be received in the New Year by Red Cross Philippines.
