Mayor in support of petition for play park
Tuesday, 17 June 2014
OVER 250 people have signed a petition asking for the provision of play park facilities in the Cloughreagh area of Bessbrook - and organisers of the petition are hopeful that a planned redevelopment of the nearby Derrymore Wood will include a children's park and other facilities for young people.
Darren Hatfield, who organised the petition and set up the "Park for Cloughreagh, Bessbrook" facebook page, said residents are fed-up with the lack of facilities for children.
Over 340 people have signed up to the online campaign and Mr Hatfield said there is growing support for new park facilities in a redevelopment of Derrymore Wood.
“I started the petition about three weeks ago because there are no facilities really focused on younger children in the area," said Mr Hatfield. "Cloughreagh has a football court that is okay for the older ones, but nothing for the toddlers, babies and primary school children.
“Our Park for Cloughreagh Bessbrook page on facebook has had 340 likes in just over a week and we also have 250 signatures. I am working together with Friends of Derrymore and there are ongoing talks about a park going in Derrymore Wood and these signatures will be used to push for that.
“I recently met with Mayor Daire Hughes who is in full support. Once the petition is full I will be presenting it to the council so they can see what a park in Derrymore Wood or in the area means to the local people."
New mayor Daire Hughes has backed residents' pleas for new facilities for children and said he is hopeful that an agreement can be reached with the Friends of Derrymore group to include a play area in any redevelopment of the park.
