Sinn Fein's Murphy calls for Arlene Foster to stand aside

Tuesday, 3 January 2017

SINN Fein MLA Conor Murphy has called for First Minister, Arlene Foster, to stand aside to facilitate an independent investigation into the Rural Heating Incentive (RHI) fiasco.

He also said that the DUP were in denial about the mounting public outrage in relation to the RHI scheme and the serious allegations of incompetence, corruption and abuse.

Commenting on the ongoing issue, the Newry & Armagh MLA stated: "The DUP are in denial about the mounting public outrage, relating to the RHI scheme and the serious allegations of incompetence, corruption and abuse.

"Revelations that Arlene Foster had written to banks asking them to support the RHI scheme is further evidence of the need for an independent, time-framed, robust and transparent investigation into the whole RHI debacle."

Mr Murphy called for in independent review which, he believes, should be carried out by a judicial figure "from outside this jurisdiction and be appointed by the Attorney General".

He added: "Arlene Foster should stand aside to facilitate that judicial led investigation until it brings forward a preliminary report.

"This is what is required to restore public confidence in the Assembly and the political institutions."
