Unemployment rises slightly

Tuesday, 21 February 2017

UNEMPLOYMENT rose month-on-month in Newry, Mourne and Down - but by the smallest of margins.

A total of 2,523 people were claiming unemployment benefits in January, just three more than were on the dole in December.

The rise was the smallest out of all of the council areas in Northern Ireland.

A total of 1,743 men and 780 women were collecting benefits in January. All told, that's 787 less than the same time in 2016. Only the Belfast and Derry and Strabane council areas have seen bigger unemployment drops over the course of the year.
