Consultant hits out at Trust during Board meeting thumbnail PROTESTERS gathered at Thursday's Southern Trust Board meeting to voice their opposition to proposed cuts at Daisy Hill's Emergency Department.

A DAISY Hill consultant dropped a bombshell at Thursday's Southern Trust Board meeting by claiming that Junior Doctors in Craigavon Area Hospital are being paid more than those in Daisy Hill.

Dr Donal Duffin, who has been working at Daisy Hill for 10 years, handed his evidence in a sealed envelope to the Chair of the Trust Roberta Brownlee on Thursday morning and claimed the Board was not "telling the truth".

In a sensational speech, Dr Duffin also stated that the decision to downgrade Daisy Hill is "fact" and has been there since "day one of the Southern Trust".

Members of the public in attendance expressed their dismay at the claims as one shouted "shame" towards the board members, while another claimed that the meeting was a "waste of time" before walking out in fury.

Before the meeting began over 100 protesters stormed the halls of the Trust's Craigavon headquarters, chanting "save Daisy Hill" in a passionate rally to reverse any decision to reduce the service's at Daisy Hill's Emergency Department.

A clearly emotional Dr Duffin went on to say that "service, after service, after service" has been moved to Craigavon during his time at Daisy Hill.

"Stephen McNally [Acting Chief Executive of the Southern Trust] said he had lots of decisions to make but I have heard that at the last two Trust meetings," Mr Duffin told the Board meeting.

“The decision to downgrade Daisy Hill is fact and it's been there from day one of the Southern Trust.

“In the 10 years I worked in Daisy Hill, service after service after service has been moved to Craigavon.

“The service I set up 10 years ago was removed when I was on leave.

“Daisy Hill has been treated as a poor cousin. I do not accept that we are being treated equally and I demand that they stop immediately."

Mr Duffin explained that a lady, whose husband and son are only alive today because of Daisy Hill Hospital, provided him with the proof that Junior Doctors are being paid more in Craigavon than Daisy Hill.

She claimed that the Trust was "lying".

“The lady told me something that I heard before and I didn't believe it, but Junior Doctors are being paid extra to work in Craigavon than Daisy Hill and I was told that by Junior Doctors on both sites," Dr Duffin told an astonished audience.

“I ran scared and shut up and said nothing until the lady gave me the sheet of paper.

“She also said the Southern Trust hasn't been looking for locums but I think she's wrong there.

“Since early April all advertisements [for positions] stopped but only started again after the last meeting. I can't believe that but I have to hand it [the evidence] to you.

“Junior Doctors on the nightshift, this week, in Southern Trust emergency medicine are being paid a certain rate.

“Junior Doctors have the same rate but Junior Doctors in Craigavon are being paid a remarkably increased rate.

“If you ask about it in Daisy Hill you're told it doesn't exist.

“You are not treating us fairly and you are not telling the truth and I'm calling you out."

Mr Duffin's closing statement was greeted with cheers by those in attendance, while Ms Brownlee said the Board will look into the allegations.
