Fell asleep at the wheel

Tuesday, 9 May 2017

BEING asleep at the wheel of a car, which was ticking over, in the early hours of the morning has resulted in a court appearance for a Newtownhamilton man.
Forty-two-year-old Edmundas Rackauskas of Dundalk Street in Newtownhamilton appeared before the last sitting of Newry Magistrate's court, charged with being in charge of a vehicle with excess alcohol in breath.
A crown lawyer told the court that at 2.20am on April 8, police were tasked to a report of a man sleeping in a vehicle on a garage forecourt on the Armagh Road, Newtownhamilton.
Upon arrival, police found that the keys were in the car and it was running.
The defendant was noted to be unsteady on his feet, and smelling of alcohol.
A preliminary breath test was failed by the defendant, and in custody a lower reading of 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath was recorded.
The lawyer told the court that Rackauskas had no previous record.
The defendant was fined 200, 10 penalty points were endorsed on his licence and an offender levy of 15 was also imposed.
