NEWTOWNHAMILTON High School has been named as the top non-selective controlled school in Northern Ireland for 2015/16.

It has also got the honour of being the fourth best non-grammar school in Northern Ireland, based on exam performance at GCSE.

And Sacred Heart in Newry has been listed as the fourth best grammar school in the country.

The tables, released by the Irish News, show that the school finished above St Patrick's High School in Keady, which was fifth, in the non-grammar school league table, and Markethill High School (14th).

St Paul's High School, Bessbrook, was 15th and St Mary's High School in Newry was 19th.

St Louis' Grammar School came 22nd on the grammar school list.

The figures were based on the number of pupils gaining 5 GCSE grades at A*-C, including GCSE English and Maths.

Congratulating Newtownhamilton High School, Ulster Unionist Party representative, Councillor David Taylor, said: "Newtownhamilton High School is very highly regarded within the local community and their achievement of being identified as the top non-selective controlled school is testament to the high quality standard of education provided at the school.

"I want to pay tribute to the Principal, Neil Megaw and his extremely hard working staff and indeed all the pupils and parents associated with the school on this success.

“They should all be very proud of this significant achievement.

“Our smaller class sizes have contributed significantly to the high quality teaching and learning which is provided by our enthusiastic and dedicated staff," Mr Megaw said.

“Our 2016 GCSE statistics once again prove that Newtownhamilton High School can compete with the very best non-selective schools in the province."
