Trust staff bank on Hospice Lotto

Tuesday, 13 June 2017

THE Southern Area Hospice Lottery continues to go from strength to strength as it accrues an ever-increasing level of support from the local business fraternity.

Staff from the First Trust Bank and the Confederation of Community Groups have become the latest weekly subscribers to the popular lottery, where players can win a weekly prize of up to 5,000.

Fiona McGivern, Assistant Manager of First Trust, Newry, said: "I would say that there's probably not any of the staff that haven't been affected directly or indirectly by the illnesses that the Hospice provides services for. As a bank, we would be very community involved.

"The linkage between First Trust in Newry and the Hospice was started by Pat Sheppard, who was my first manager here and who does a lot of volunteer work for the Hospice," said Ms McGivern.

Kathleen McCaul, of the Confederation of Community Groups, explained that they are a charitable and voluntary organisation.

"We deal with all community groups within the Newry, Mourne and Down area," she said.

"[I believe] the Hospice is such a deserving place, so hopefully this little bit that we're doing will help them out."

A Hospice volunteer herself, Kathleen said: "As the main community organisation for the Newry, Mourne and Down area, we were very happy to join as we felt it would do some good for the Hospice. Once it's coming out of our wages we'll not really notice, but we know then that it's going to a good cause."

Josephine Keenan from the Hospice emphasised how integral the lottery is to the charity as a means of generating continued funding.

"Local hospice care is so important, with over a thousand families being cared for last year," she said.

"The Hospice Lottery can help fund the care and support that we provide to our patients and their families when they need it most.

"With the chance to win weekly cash prizes of up to 5,000 and in the knowledge that you are raising funds for a great local cause, it really is a win win."

Josephine hopes the example of the First Trust and Confederation of Community groups will inspire other organisations to join, and said: "We hope that the support of the First Trust and Confederation of Community Groups will inspire other businesses and work places to support us through our Lottery Draw.

"If you would like to sign up to the Hospice Lottery and be in with a chance to win, you can either complete the tear out slip below, (or to the side) and return to the address provided. Or to sign up over the phone contact Josephine on 028 3025 1333."
