Car dealership granted outline permission

A NEW car showroom which is expected to deliver a 3.5m investment in the Newry area has been granted outline planning permission.

The new dealership, which is being built by Shelbourne Motors on the Armagh Road, is expected to create 60 jobs.

Planners made the decision this week.

The firm, who have a showroom between Tandragee and Portadown, are to build a new multi-franchise car showroom together with three adjoining showrooms.

In their support statement, it was claimed that the project would "bring substantial ecnomic and employment benefits" to the area.

They said that the site would enable customers to test drive vehicles "without becoming ensnarled in or contributing to traffic congestion in the city".

The statement adds: "The plans to create an iconic car franchise at this location will result in planning gain through delivery of an attractive site on the edge of the city limits adjacent to a major traffic route.

"It will deliver state-of-the-art facilities not only to Newry, but also surrounding areas, something that is normally only seen in major European cities."

However, in approving the plans, council officials said that work would not be allowed to start until vehicular access is constructed and until a programme of archaeological works has been implemented.
