NEWRY City Runners presents the fastest, flattest half marathon in Ireland.

Part of the Pure Running Half Marathon Series, the Newry City Merchants Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 27, at 10am.

There won't be a Newry City Marathon this year, instead it is hoped the half marathon will attract larger numbers.

This will be an ideal race for runners looking to set a new personal best or those seeking to complete their first half marathon and it also promises to be a great day out for all the family.

The race is being hosted by Newry City Runners and it was launched by the Council Chairperson Roisin Mulgrew, who herself was a keen runner.

Also attending were members of NCR and Eamonn Connolly, of Newry Business Improvement District who are supporting this prestigious event.

Club Chairman Damian Mulholland said: "Over the past ten years our members have helped raise over 100,000 for local charities through sponsorship and fund raising.

"Our club decided to host this event to showcase the ability of runners and Newry as an appealing place to visit.

"The race will start and finish in Albert Basin with runners turning at the historic Narrow Water Castle." Newry City Runners want to make Newry City known throughout Ireland as a centre not only for running excellence but also sporting excellence.

With this in mind they are starting and finishing the half marathon in Albert Basin. The route is flat and fast, which will make the race one of the top half marathons in Ireland.

Also NCR want to give everyone the opportunity to get into sport at a level that suits them as they appreciate that most of us are not elite athletes; and also to raise awareness and much needed funds for local charities.

The Newry City Merchants Half Marathon has been included in the Pure Running Half Marathon Series and it will attract over 1,000 participants to the City plus thousands of supporters.

There will also be a fun run as part of the main event to build anticipation and excitement and family activities for spectators and runners to enjoy as they relax in the magnificent surroundings of Albert Basin.

It is expected to be a massive event and this could be the perfect event for first-timers, so why not give it a try?
