Priest is threatened in wake of scandal

Tuesday, 13 March 2018

THE parish priest in Hilltown has revealed that he has received a threat to leave Clonduff parish.
Fr Charlie Byrne told parishioners that he had received a letter during Mass on Sunday.
While he did not make clear what was said in the letter, he did describe the message, which was related to the Malachy Finnegan sexual abuse scandal, as "abusive".
Fr Byrne said he had passed the letter on to his solicitor, who had reported the threats to the police.
There is no suggestion that Fr Byrne had anything to do with the scandal.
Last week the Newry Democrat reported that Fr Byrne had announced that a decision has been taken that he is not to stay in the house at night, until the future of the parochial house is resolved.
Some Clonduff parishioners have said that they will never set foot in the house again, while others have called for it to be razed to the ground after it was revealed Finnegan had carried out some of his abuse there.
