Five arrested following Newry shooting

Tuesday, 27 March 2018

REPORTS are coming in of a shooting in the Altmore Gardens area of Newry this evening.

The incident has been condemned by Newry city councillors Michael Savage and Liz Kimmins.

In a tweet local police confirmed that no injuries were reported and that five males have been arrested during follow up enquiries. Two cars were also seized.

Cllr Savage described the incident as "an act of lunacy".

"We all thought the days of guns on our streets were over," he said.

"It is a miracle no-one has been killed or badly injured as a result of shots being fired at a house in a built up area. Local people are furious that this can happen in their area.

"I would urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact the PSNI."

Meanwhile Sinn Fein representative Cllr Kimmins said: "This was a extremely reckless act which endangered the lives of those in the house.

"Our community is fortunate that we're not dealing with a tragedy and there is anger about this criminal incident.

"There is no place for guns on our streets and anyone with any information should bring it to the PSNI."

It's understood the shooting took place around 9pm tonight.

A PSNI spokesperson asked anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference 1408 26/03/18.
