Cheers! Newry is fifth cheapest place for a pint

Tuesday, 5 June 2018

FOR those of you who enjoy a nice relaxing pint, you might soon have to start thinking about how it will affect your bank balance.
Britain saw the average price for a lager rise to 3.58 at the end of 2017 and it's now common to find yourself charged 4 per pint on a trip to the local.
Newry residents can rest easy, however, as they benefit from the second cheapest pint in Northern Ireland (2.80) - in joint 5th place with Lancaster and Salisbury for the most reasonable beers in the entire UK.
Of course, not everyone is so lucky. According to price comparison experts Money Guru, pub goers in London (5.19) and Oxford (4.57) are hit the hardest, both paying well over the average per pint.
That's not to say that there aren't those relishing cheaper rounds. Carlisle (2.35) and Chelmsford (2.60) are home to the most reasonable pints in Britain.
Here is the rundown of the ten priciest and cheapest pints you'll find across the UK.
Top 5 - Priciest Pints
London - 5.19
Oxford - 4.57
Edinburgh - 4.35
Bristol - 4.32
Winchester - 4.30
Top 5 - Cheapest Pints
Carlisle - 2.35
Chelmsford - 2.60
Newport - 2.75
Armagh - 2.78
Newry -     2.80
The most significant price rises have occurred in Scotland, with a recently introduced minimum unit price of 50p. To put this in context, a 12-pack of cans of Aldi lager have risen from 6.29 to 10.82 as of May 1st, 2018.
It's not just beer that's being hit hard by this legislation, cider has also felt the effects with 3L bottles such as the notorious Frosty Jacks now costing 11.25 (up from 3.50) which has been one of the most talked about aspects of the price hike.
Although the future of beer pricing across the UK is uncertain, further price rises seem inevitable. However, with it's enviable position at the lower end of the price spectrum, the good news is that Newry won't be seeing the worst of it.
