NEWRY’S Peadar Connolly with the medals he won in Loano Italy
NEWRY'S ace swimmer Peadar Connolly is a winner on global scale after winning the 50-metre freestyle at the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation World Swimming Championship.
Connolly, who also recently swam across Camlough Lake, competed last month in Loano Italy where over 350 Down Syndrome athletes from 21 countries, competed in the week long event.
The 26-year-old was part of an eight-man Irish team and collectively they won an amazing 29 medals.
He won gold after narrowly beating Alex Puntreiro from Brazil by one hundredth of a second. As well as picking up the top prize in the 50-metre freestyle, Connolly also collected a silver medal in the 100-metre backstroke, with a personal best time of 1.43.36 and he also won two bronze medals, for 200-metre backstroke and as part of the 4x50m relay team.
The DSISO Europeans take place later this year with the world event in Mexico in 2014.
