Newry rattle high-flying ‘Garvey
Tuesday, 22 January 2013
Newry II 2-4 Lisnagarvey II.
NEWRY pushed second-placed Lisnargarvey close before eventually losing out in the dying minutes.
Lisnagarvey visited the Belfast Road on Saturday and only a single goal separated the sides until the visitors scored with the last hit of the game.
As has been the case for a number of weeks, Newry looked organised in the first half and when the visitors did manage to break through they met their match in Newry keeper Henry who carried his good form from the previous outing into the game against the 'Garvey.
Nevertheless, the visitors did manage to breach the defence once in the first half but Newry responded quickly and equalised early in the second with McWilliams finishing expertly on his strong side after a long Hogg aerial from the back.
Both teams had short corners throughout but neither defence was beaten thanks to strong running off the line.
Lisnagarvey scored next with a deflected effort and a fortuitous double deflection then made it 3-1.
Newry were league winners last year and they displayed the grit of champions by pushing 'Garvey back into their 25 with relentless pressure. It eventually told as Adams finished off a good team move with a close range effort.
The next few minutes saw consistent Newry pressure but the visitors somehow held onto their lead.
A breakaway and a disputed short corner saw Lisnagarvey score, meaning the game finished 4-2 in favour of the visitors.
Newry will be disappointed not to have secured the point they probably deserved and will be hoping to turn good performances into more positive results in the coming weeks.

Newry III 0-2 Lisnagarvey
NEWRY hosted a very strong and experienced Lisnagarvey side in one of their last games of the season.
Lisnagarvey came out strong right from the off, putting the Newry defence under pressure.
Newry managed to gain control and applied some pressure on the visitors as the home side's forwards began to get more attempts on the 'Garvey goal.
Things remained balanced until just before half time when 'Garvey picked up a short corner and fired a shot through Newry keeper Elmore's legs.
The second half saw both sides proving to be a good match for each with the two sides having their fair share of possession and chances.
Newry were pushing to get an equaliser through substitutes Blakely and Foster but things didn't go their way as Lisnagarvey picked up a second goal through an unmarked man at the back post.
Newry were unlucky to concede a second as a just result would have been a draw, but with two games remaining Newry hope to secure some vital points which would help secure the league title and promotion for the club.
NEWRY III: P Elmore A mc Gaffin, K Best, A Baird, E Graham, J Niblock, S Garvey, A Foster, S Blakely, M McCague, L Irvine, J McWilliams, G Elias and D Taylor.
Newry Ladies 0-1 Donaghadee Ladies
NEWRY Ladies suffered a narrow defeat thanks to a deflected Donaghadee effort in the second half of what had been an absorbing contest.
It was a keenly fought match with chances for both sides but neither team were able to make the breakthrough during a tense first half.
Both teams emerged with more attacking vigour in the second half. Newry were awarded a short corner in the first minute following the re-start but failed to beat the Donaghadee stopper.
Both teams narrowly missed opportunities but unfortunately for Newry, Donaghadee were awarded a goal following a deflection off a Newry stick. It was enough to secure a precious victory for the visitors.
NEWRY LADIES: C Waddell, D L Inns, A Gamble, C Gamble, J Heatrick, N Burns, K Baird, J Cochrane, N Shields, A Magowan, L Girvan and D Mc Minn.
