MAYOBRIDGE 1-15 ROSTREVOR 1-08.
MAYOBRIDGE put one foot into the Down Senior Championship quarter-finals with a storming second half performance to shake off rivals Rostrevor, writes Steve Malone.
It was the opening game of the Morgan Fuels Senior Championship in Pairc Esler and the perfect stage for Mayobridge's Benny Coulter and Kevin Barnsey O'Rourke to showcase their skills.
In last week's edition I said to expect both O'Rourke and Coulter to be firing in all cylinders and that's what they did.
The duo scored 12 points between them and Rostrevor's young defence had no answer. And they could have scored more as both Coulter and O'Rourke fisted over the bar, when a shot at goal would have been justified.
Mayobridge's method was simple. Keep Coulter around the edge of the square and bomb high balls in on top of him. And despite being outnumbered he won more than his fair share of possession and with the fire in his belly it was clear he was revelling being played closer to goal.
O'Rourke, was steady with free-kicks and slick in attack.
But the Bridge didn't get it all their own way, as Rostrevor took the lead and remained in front at half-time.
Damien Magee (2) and Adrian Mackin gave the Reds a three point lead but Mayobridge were wasteful, kicking five wides within 10-minutes.
But Kevin O'Rourke steadied the ship with a converted free and then Mayobridge tagged on a further four points without reply, through O'Rourke (free), Coulter, Shane O'Hare (free) and Conleth O'Hare.
Damien Magee and O'Rourke traded scores and when Coulter stroked over a point with ease on 27 minutes, the Sky Blues seemed to have done enough to take charge.
But there was to be a twist as Adrian Mackin converted a free and then Brian Cole cleverly bagged a goal as, with Bridge keeper Shealan Strain off his line, Sean Magee floated a lovely weighted pass into Cole, who didn't catch the ball but instead palmed it over the keeper and then punched into the net.
And with their confidence high Rostrevor increased their lead through another Mackin free to lead 1-06 to 0-07 at the break.
Coulter could have thought it wasn't going to be his day when his shot rattled off both goalposts the crossbar and stayed out.
However, O'Rourke converted a free before Mayobridge enjoyed a slice of luck when Rostrevor's keeper Tony Fearon failed to deal with the slippery wet high ball and substitute John Caldwell stooped to punch the ball into the net.
It was the shot in the arm Mayobridge needed and they didn't look back.
Mayobridge's Gavin Barry nullified Rostrevor's attacking threat and Jamie Barr, Adrian Barry and Noel Sexton bossed the middle and big John Caldwell got stuck in.
O'Rourke sent over a sensational left-footed 40-metre effort, from under the stands and Coulter closed in on goal but opted to fist over.
O'Rourke and Coulter took turns in scoring until they led 1-14 to 1-06 with only five minutes left to play.
Declan Magee and Gairiad Clarke scored Rostrevor's only points of the second half before Mayobridge's Caldwell struck a long-range effort over the bar to wrap up victory.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Mayobridge's Kevin O'Rourke and Gavin Barry were excellent but it was Benny Coulter who thrived on out-catching, speeding past and out-witting defenders and there is much more to come from Coulter and he is my Man of the Match.
GAME-CHANGER: Caldwell's goal on 41 minutes gave Mayobridge the impetus to finish the job and equally knocked the stuffing out of Rostrevor.
