MAYOBRIDGE 2-05 ROSTREVOR 1-11.
ROSTREVOR finished with a flourish to see off a spirited Mayobridge side and win the 2013 Morgan Fuels Down Minor Championship title.
With 10 minutes to go at a wet Pairc Esler on Sunday the young Sky Blues scored a cracking goal to battle back from three points in arrears and square matters.
However, the Seasiders, never for an instance taking their eyes off the winning post, fired over three points in the last eight minutes to run out deserving, if narrow, victors.
This was a match in which both sides dominated in patches. Mayobridge began like the proverbial house on fire but Rostrevor finished like a steam train.
Mayobridge ruled the roost in the early stages with CJ Barr, Cory Quinn, Darren McPolin and Darren Mynes pointing without reply. And indeed in the opening 15 minutes their rivals didn't have a single shot at the target and scarcely even got over the halfway line. But things were to change.
On 19 minutes Rostrevor began to perk up with Piaras Kane opening their account with a free kick. This score seemed to revitalise the Reds and on 20 minutes, following an attacking flurry, the excellent Conor Doyle slammed a shot off the Bridge post.
Furthermore in the final ten minutes of the half it was all Rostrevor. Joe Morgan, a constant threat to the Sky Blues rearguard, knocked over from distance and then Kane levelled with a fine effort.
And with two minutes to go to the break the young Reds struck goal-dust. Morgan and Kane combined to set up midfielder Damian Keenan who was somewhat lucky in that his shot cannoned off a Bridge defender and past keeper Shane Smyth to finish in the back of the net.
In the second half the Young Sky Blues began as they did the opening half and took the game to their rivals. Darren McPolin had a shot blocked on 32 minutes and then a minute later Rostrevor had a let-off when the Reds' keeper Declan McAteer made a stunning save with his legs when it seemed Conor Rooney must net.
However, on 35 minutes the Bridge got their first score in almost 20 minutes when Barry Cunningham pointed and then two minutes later big midfielder Darren Mynes latched onto an incisive Cory Quinn pass to blast in the Rostrevor net.
Mayobridge were again in the driving seat but unfortunately for them they couldn't stay there. And in the next 10 minutes the resurgent young Reds stepped back on the accelerator, and added four more points without reply, these coming from Jonny Connolly, Morgan (2) and Kane.
Rostrevor were three in front but Mayobridge weren't finished and on 30 minutes the Sky Blues Man of the Match Darren Mynes levelled with a mighty score, rising high to fist a super Cory Quinn long ball into the back of the Rostrevor net.
Yet that was the final Bridge throw of the dice and in the last 10 minutes Rostrevor won the Championship following points from the inspirational duo Piaras Kane and Conor Doyle with Jordan Fegan also getting on the scoreboard.
In the conclusive minutes Mayobridge knew it wasn't to be their day as first Quinn missed an easy free, then they hit the post and to cap it all they had their midfielder CJ Barr red-carded.
At the final whistle Rostrevor were ecstatic and celebrated in style after skipper Jonny Connolly was presented with the Collie Curran Cup.
