NUMMY'S A have caused a stir in the Newry Darts fraternity after withdrawing from the Newry and District Darts League according to the darts committee.
While the Newry and District Darts Committee will meet later this week to discuss the possibility of Nummy's re-entry to the league, they issued the following statement.
“It was with regret last night that the committee of the Newry and District Darts league were informed of Nummy's A decision to withdraw from the league with immediate effect.
“Nummy's A have an illustrious and long association with darts in the area going back several decades, this was recognised as recently as 2012 when the committee felt Willie Nummy was a worthy first recipient of the league's Hall of Fame award.
“The present situation has arisen from a league game scheduled to be played on December 13, 2013 between Nummy's A and First & Last. The result card stated that Nummy's A had won 8-0 due to a no show from the First & Last. The First & Last disputed this and as a result a meeting was held on Monday past.
“At the meeting it was clear the First & Last had in fact turned up for the fixture but a dispute regarding the start time led to it not being played. Due to this the league committee fined Nummy's A for falsifying the result card (a decision accepted by Nummy's A on the night), and also decided that the game be declared void with neither team receiving the two points given that there was no valid reason for the game not being played on the scheduled night.
“Nummy's A asked on Monday whether they had a right to appeal this decision and were informed that they could if they so wished, unfortunately they have opted not to take this route.
“The committee would also like to point out that league secretary Liam Bradley declared from the outset that he would have no part to play in the decision making process, citing a potential conflict of interest as his own team were in direct competition with Nummy's A for the Premier Division league title.
“The Newry & District Dart League would like to wish Nummy's A all the best for the future and hope to see them playing darts soon, whether in the Newry League or further afield.
“The committee have no further comment to make on this matter at present."
The Democrat contacted a member of the Nummy's A team but he said he preferred not to make any comment.
