WINDMILL Stars U12 played super stuff to defeat the mighty Hillsborough Boys 3-0 and reach the final of the Lisburn Cup.
The Stars, managed By John Joe Maguire, Liam Bradley and Martin Connell, did the business after travelling to Lisburn's Barbour playing fields on Wednesday night.
The first half began with Hillsborough on the front foot and taking the game to the Newry team. But Windmill keeper Aodhan Furlong made a fine save from a powerful shot from distance.
Yet after this nervous start Windmill switched into gear with Shea Kearney and John McGovern pulling the strings in midfield and indeed on 17 minutes they came close to taking the lead when McGovern set up Charlie Brown whose shot was deflected past the post.
From the resulting corner Windmill went ahead, Dean Bradley turning brilliantly in the box to smash the ball into the top corner of the net.
And just five minutes later the Stars scored again, this time Brown slipping the ball into the path of in-running McGovern who lobbed the Hillsborough keeper to double the Windmill tally.
After the break Hillsborough began finding a bit of space around the middle of the field, but the Windmill defence of Jordan Burns, Caolan Connell, Ben Maguire and Tiernan Murphy were up to the task, all four having great games.
On 48 minutes it was match over when Jack Murtagh played a high ball out to the right for his cousin Charlie Brown to run on to and the latter's first time 25-yard bullet drive zipped into the roof of the net.
Just before the end it could have been four when Dean Bradley slipped the ball to Shea Fearon whose shot was inches wide. This was a great result for this young, inexperienced Windmill Stars side, who are playing in their first season. They now go on to face Lisburn Youth in the Lisburn Cup Final on May 10.
Windmill Stars: Aodhan Furlong, Jordan Burns, Caolan Connell, Ben Maguire, Tiernan Murphy, John McGovern, Dean Bradley, Shea Kearney, Shea Fearon, Charlie Brown and Jack Murtagh with subs (used): Jack Shields for Fearon and Shaun McGovern for Murtagh.
