A YOUNG Newry boxer is the talk of the boxing world following an incredible performance at the European Elite Schoolboy Championships.
Kane Tucker stormed to a bronze medal to complete an incredible performance by the popular young St John Bosco boxer. The teenager made history by becoming the first ever boxer from Newry to win a medal at the event, but it came as little surprise given his prowess in the ring to date.
Kane was fighting in the boys 62kg category and fought his way to a medal decider against the current European Champion Edgard Tcambov in what proved to be a barnstormer of a fight. Luck wasn't on young Kane's side as the decision went to the Russian but most observers were in agreement that the decision really could have went any way.
“I'm extremely proud of Kane and all of the effort that he's put in through the years has been richly rewarded with a medal," said his father Barry.
“The fact is that this is a first for Newry, given the boxing lineage in this city, it only makes me prouder of Kane."
He paid tribute to the coaching staff at the Bosco.
“Everything we achieve is the result of a collective efort whereby a lot of planning, preparation and work go in behind the scenes. We want to develop these kids not only a boxers, but to also instil values and respect for their opponent and in how to conduct themselves as decent young men," he said.
