Mourne ultimatum returns

Tuesday, 22 July 2014

Pride is at stake and old rivalries are rekindled when Newry City and Warrenpoint Town lock horns tonight (Tuesday) at 7.30pm in a friendly in the Showgrounds. With Newry continuing in their rich vein of form with an 8-0 thumping of Rectory Rangers, the arrival of a Premiership team will give Darren Mullen's side a true reflection of where they lie ahead of a prospective promotional push.
In what promises to be an intriguing affair, the derby between local rivals with slightly different aspirations for the season, is being eagerly anticipated by both managers, as given the familiarity between the two sides, there is still bragging rights and bravado at stake.
Outlining to the Democrat the task facing his team Darren Mullen said: "We welcome the arrival of Warrenpoint to the Showgrounds, as it will provide the team with a stern challenge from a Premiership side that we embrace. Both sides are familiar with each other, and from our perspective, it will give us a real insight into the work we've put in in the summer and whether any adjustments and fine-tuning may be needed before the season kicks off"
“I'm very happy with the form that we have shown in the pre-season, especially Saturday's performance, but we won't be getting carried away with ourselves as it doesn't garner us any extra points at the end of the season," said Mullen.
“We know where we are and what our objectives are, and I see this game as a means for acting
as a gauge for any improvements we need to implement."
Both sides have had a tumultuous few years and will be seeking to assert dominion over their local rivals tomorrow night, Newry to build on recent momentum and help kick-start a promotional surge, and Warrenpoint to maintain the status-quo, boost morale and potentially launch a title tilt.
