TEAM Newry Muay Thai and team trainer Shane McIlroy has hailed the visit of Tyrone Spong as a dream come true.
McIlroy welcomed 10 times world champion and superstar of Muay Thai and kickboxing to Newry Muay Thai and the Compound Gym in WIN Business Park, last month.
“Having a superstar in the sport visit the gym was a dream come true for me and all those that paid to see and train with him," said McIlroy.
Tyrone Spong aka King of the Ring has 10 world titles from middleweight right up to heavyweight. He is known worldwide and currently trains in American. He not only trains Muay Thai and kickboxing but also mixed martial arts and that is why he was in lreland in the first place to watch the UFC.
He told Team Newry Muay Thai the UFC have already offered him a good contract but he did not take up their offer as he wants to fight MMA, boxing and kickboxing. If he signed he could only fight for the UFC. Spong is a huge star with over 115 professional fights only eight losses and over 80 per cent of his wins coming from way of knockout.
The seminar and workshop was full with over 45 people packed into the gym and he showed those present his skills and different killer techniques to use along with a two hour session, which included lots of cardio technical striking and conditioning.
“It was an incredible night for the gym to welcome such a star in the sport.
We greeted him, we trained hard and he also sat us down as we fired questions at him, in which he replied with great advice that can only help everyone from beginners to the guys that fight regularly this will push us forward as a team to be successful," McIlroy said.
“For myself as a professional Muay Thai fighter and ISKA Northern lreland K-1 Champion this will only help and motivate me to be the very best. As for a being a trainer he gave some very valuable tips that will help the club progress and be even more successful."
