Camlough Lake Water Festival on this weekend

Tuesday, 19 August 2014

THE much-acclaimed Camlough Lake Water Festival will take place this weekend - from Friday August 22 to Sunday 24.
The Festival opens at 6pm on Friday with the Lord and Lady of the Lake swim, including a new "buddy-swim" section plus a skins section, named after the legendary Joe McElhaw. The organisers are expecting close to 300 swimmers for this 2.7k length-of-the-lake swim which in previous years had international triathletes Aileen Reid and Russell White participating - not to mention our own Colleen Mallon who recently broke the Irish record for the North Channel crossing.
Also on Friday evening at 10pm there's a moonlit night swim. This is a magical experience that takes place on the 750m Guinness World Record course with swimmers going in pairs, illuminated by the light of glow sticks, with of course the Water Safety team as support.
Saturday is a day packed with events for all age groups. The Grounded Coffee dock will be in place from 9am and all are welcome to swim out to get a cuppa. There will be junior and senior aquathlons and the unique Try-a-Tri where triathlon beginners get the opportunity to test themselves over shorter distances of swimming, biking and running.
Sunday's events are for long-distance open water swimmers and the Camlough Lake Water Festival committee are pleased to host the prestigious Irish Long Distance Association, Swim Ireland and Swim Ulster National championships for both 10k and 5k with a junior 5k section.
Athletes have been training at Camlough Lake all year, especially those who have been given a blue "Step Out Of The Ordinary" challenge envelope. All events will be chip timed and entry fees are low with options for a weekend, family and individual passes.
The Festival's main sponsors are: The Quays, Newry Southern Regional College plus the Newry and Mourne District Council. Other sponsors include The Carrickdale Hotel, M & M Services, O'Brien's Sandwich Bars, Giggles Day Care, Mourne Hydraulic Hose and Fittings, Newry Triathlon Club, La Dolce Vita, A1 Safety and Workwear, Doyle's Bar, Camlough, ReGen Waste, Macadoreys Opticians, Chill Swim and Blue Seventy and Bridge End Bikes.
