SHEA Rafferty was in blistering form at the first Swim Ulster qualifying meet of the current season, held over the past weekend in Lisburn's Lagan Valley Leisureplex.
The Newry and Mourne Swimming Club member won an astonishing four gold medals - in the 50-metres butterfly, the 100-metres butterfly, the 100-metres freestyle and the 200-metres backcrawl. It was a sensational achievement.
But he wasn't on his own as the cream of swimmers from the Newry club were in competition at the gala to gain much sought-after times and to grab some medals.
The swimmers were on form and everyone achieved personal best times. Sean McKevitt won gold in the 400-metres individual medley, silver in the 100-metres breaststroke and bronze in 50 'fly while Alexander Marfunin won silver in the 200-metres breaststroke and bronze in the 100 breaststroke.
John Moan was another on the medal trail and he won bronze in the 200-metres backcrawl with Stephanie Hart also picking up bronze - in the 50-metres backcrawl.
It was an exceptional start to the season for the swimmers with each one moving closer to the times they are seeking to take them towards the Irish divisions next summer.
