Bessbrook sink Ports with six of the best
Tuesday, 13 December 2016
AT one stage this Mid Ulster Shield game, between Bessbrook United and Portadown BBOB looked destined for a draw but in the final quarter the south Armagh men went into cruise control and banged in a phenomenal four goals, writes Gerry Patton.
Bessbrook United ...6
Portadown BBOB ...2
Played at Orior Park on Saturday, it was a terrific game with United attacking right from the start through Conor Giles who burst down the right to set up Lee Fallon but his first time effort was well saved by the Portadown keeper.
Minutes later a long ball from Alan Tasker fell right in to the path of Conor Giles who connected first time but again the visiting keeper was perfectly positioned to push his effort away.
Bessbrook were well on top but on 12 minutes they were caught on the break when the Portadown winger skipped past his marker and slid the ball past the advancing keeper.
The home side responded immediately when a beautifully flighted free-kick from Sean Geary caused mayhem in the penalty area with Ryan O'Hare eventually bundling the ball over the line.
On 20 minutes Bessbrook went ahead when O'Hare left his marker standing and then lashed the ball past the hapless keeper.
After that it was BBOB who took the game by the horns with the right winger forcing a good save from Alan Tasker and then minutes later he stood helpless as the centre forward's header was cleared off the line.
Minutes before the interval the same player held his head in frustration as he saw his first time effort crash off the post.
After the break the visitors forced a corner and from the resultant kick a towering header from the Portadown striker was headed off the line by Sean Geary but poor defending allowed BBOB to retrieve the ball and lash in the equaliser.
Two minutes later another corner-kick nearly put them ahead but Tasker produced a fantastic save to deny a header from the impressive centre forward.
It was the visitors who were now beginning to dominate but when Bessbrook forced a corner on the hour they took the lead through Fallon who stooped low to head home.
Minutes later a bit of magic from Ryan O'Hare set up Conor Giles who calmly slid the ball past the keeper.
Bessbrook kept pressing and went further ahead when a great run and cross from Lee Fallon resulted in Lee Bradley sliding in at the far post.
Ryan O'Hare could also afford to blaze wide from the penalty spot as in the Seconds later he went from hero to zero when he blasted woe fully wide from the penalty spot as in the final minutes Lee Fallon added goal number six when he slipped the ball under the keeper.
