Hurson takes podium thumbnailChris Simms' trip to Carrick-on-Suir for the opening round of the Irish series resulted in second in class

THE Northern Ireland Rally Championship started at Kirkistown with Warrenpoint's Peadar Hurson taking the final podium position in his Ford Fiesta debut despite a costly stage two spin.

Last year's Group N champion Clive Kilpatrick was knocking on the door of a top ten position in 11th and bagged early points with second in class in his Markethill-based Mitsubishi Lancer, ahead of Geoff McMahon and Rob Graham.

Gareth Feenan/Barry McParland and Andrew Patterson/Robert Harold were racing each other in C6 with Feenan's Mk2-spec Escort ahead of Patterson's G3 at the finish by 16s.
