Two out of three for rowers thumbnail NEWRY Rowing Club's novice quad of Donal Toal, Dan Morgan, Fintan Carolan, Jack Boyle and Afreen Ahmed that continued their winning streak with victories over junior crews from Methodist Belfast and Royal Belfast Institute.

THE Newry Rowing Club were successful in two from three events at last weekend's Belfast Regatta. And indeed the Regatta experienced its largest ever entry, thus making for tough competition in all categories.

In the first race Ross Duffy competed in the Club Single Scull event. Ross was up against athletes from Queens University, Lagan Scullers, City of Derry, Portadown and Belfast Institute but he showed tremendous tenacity to emerge victorious from a long day that took in six races. Ross won the first and took second in the last race.

Meanwhile the Mens Novice Quad of Jack Boyle, Daniel Morgan, Donal Toal, Fintan Carolan and Afreen Ahmed continued their winning streak with a win over junior crews from Methodist Belfast and Royal Belfast Institute.

The Newry crew led each race from start to finish, in the process showing composure and power throughout. This is a team to watch over the next few years.

The Mens Club Quad qualified for the final by beating the Royal Belfast Institute crew that had previously beaten them at the Portadown Regatta, thus showing lots of progress.

The final proved a more difficult prospect though, with a sharp J18 crew from Methodist Belfast winning by two seconds over the 500m course.
