Town too hot for Saval

Tuesday, 22 August 2017

SAVAL came up against a much superior Castlewellan on Saturday but despite suffering a 23-points loss they will have to pick themselves up for another round.

Castlewellan were sharp and had booked their quarter-final place before the break with an impressive 3-09 to 0-04 lead.

Rory Burns' goal on 16 minutes opened the floodgates as Sean Dornan and Burns again found the net.

Saval to their credit kept plugging away with Niall Madine, Keelan Rice and Pat Havern scoring in the first half. And they made in-roads during the second half but were absolutely deserted by any luck when in front of the posts.

Castlewellan were in cruise control and the result never looked in doubt with young substitute Gareth McKibben particularly impressive.

Saval are a better team than they displayed on Saturday but Castlewellan were a different class and will be fancy their chances of going beyond the Down Club Championship quarter-final.

Castlewellan scorers: R Burns (2-1), D Gilmore (1-1), G McKibben (1-1), S Dornan (1-1), L McKibben (0-3), D McKibben (0-3, 0-1 free), D Morgan (0-2), S Hardy (0-2), C Flanagan (0-1).

Saval scorers: Pat Havern (0-4, 0-2 frees), N Madine (0-1), K Rice (0-1), D McCarthy (0-1), Pat Havern, M McCarthy (0-1), C Quinn (0-1).
