Silver for Dromintee's Donegan thumbnailBrian Donegan

DROMINTEE'S Brian Donegan won a silver medal at the WAKO European kickboxing championships which was held in Macedonia, last week.

Donegan fights for Desy Murphy's Northeast Mugendo Kickboxing club in Forkhill but had the fight of his life while representing Ireland to secure a wonderful silver.

A St Paul's High School Bessbrook student, Donegan was selected for the Irish Kickboxing team after winning the Irish championships earlier in the season.

Last year he won silver a silver medal at the World Championships and this trip to the Europeans was only his second international tournament.

The south Armagh lad fought his way through the quarter and semi-finals with a magnificent display of punches and high kicks sending his opponents into reverse from the start.

His final bout was against an experienced Croatian fighter who has taken part in six international tournaments with neither fighter giving way.

With Donegan's ferocious attacking style and the Croatians evasive movements they were equal at the end of the first round and the second round was similar with both giving their best.

At the end the three judges scored two in favour of the Croatian and one in favour of Donegan with only one point difference in their scores.

Senior coach Desy Murphy is extremely proud of the 15-year-old and would like to thank all the coaches and friends who help out in any way with Donegan's journey.

"It is a fabulous achievement as many people go to international tournaments and don't bring home medals," said Murphy.

"The level of competition at Europeans and Worlds obviously much higher than at national level - so he has had to undergo a lot of specialised training and Brian has worked hard and definitely he has earned his medal.

"We would especially like to thank our sponsors JMC Cycles and George McKeown for their support."

Northeast Mugendo holds kickboxing classes in Forkhill Community Centre, Abbey Grammar school Newry and St Pat's Community Centre in Lordship Co Louth.
