Hope for Mourne Rally thumbnailDouble Group N champion Clive Kilpatrick

NEW double Group N champion Clive Kilpatrick has put part of the success down to Crozier Motorsport, writes William Neill.

The Markethill team wrapped up this year's title for production cars with a round to go such was their level of success. Enjoying sealed surface events the Mitsubishi Lancer driver and Jay Colville headed to the County Antrim final earlier this month despite an appearance not required.

The introduction of automatic championship registration meant occasional crews were able to take points away from season-long campaigners to increase this year's challenge. Kilpatrick's aim result went unaffected and finished 17 points ahead of team-mate Geoff McMahon.

Philip Allen, son of late former Northern Ireland champion Glenn, was an early threat with maximum points going his way at Kirkistown's opening round. At Bishopscourt, Kilpatrick had his way when he took over the lead after Allen placed his car on a tyre pile marking the course.

Moving onto the road-closure rallies and finishes on the podium on both the Glens of Antrim and new-look Tyrone Stages meant just two-points on gravel was enough.

Rallying is a pass time for the managing director of Trueline Surveys having started with a clubman-specification Citroen Saxo in 2007. But he has went on to be among the most successful class championship competitors in the Newry area over the past three seasons with second in Group N in 2015 setting up two title wins.

Full details of next year's championship are yet to be announced but it is expected to start in March at County Down's Bishopscourt venue while the Down Rally will be a counting round.

The Mourne Rally is on the draft calendar and there is hope it will return to bring three rounds to the Newry and Down area.
