McAleenan aims for knockout thumbnailDeclan McAleenan

MMA fighter Declan McAleenan will take Ultimate Fighting to Newry when he comes up against Poland's Adam Gustab on Sunday (December 3) at the Canal Court, from 3pm.

This will be McAleenan's third professional fight and he expects a tough contest. Gustab is known to be a formidable opponent and he will be aiming to get his career back on track after losing to Belfast's 19-year-old Paul Hughes in February.

It was Gustab's first professional defeat having won two fights previous to that. And at 65.7kg the Polish fighter will be no pushover but McAleenan promises it will be a fight to remember.

"Especially with me fighting in front of my home crowd. I plan to take his head off," said McAleenan.

"I am not hoping for a decision I want a knockout or a submission or get caught trying. There definitely won't be anyone doubting who the winner is, it will be clear-cut."

Sunday will be a great opportunity for Newry's UFC and MMA fans to see Newry fighters compete as several members of the McAleenan's club Newry Muay Thai will take centre stage.

Barcroft will have two fighters compete on the night as both John Fitzpatrick and Shea Dobbin come from Barcroft while Newry's young Oisin Fox will defend his K1 title and Ruairi Lavery will make his MMA debut.

"It is not too often we get to fight in front of our own people, so this is our chance to show everyone what our gym can do," McAleenan said.

"There has been a brilliant buzz about the gym. Usually there is only one of us fighting at any one time, so the gym wouldn't be busy due to different routines. But lately everyone has been training together and pushing each other on."

McAleenan's club-mate Muszin Zembela will be the only other professional fight, which sets up an excellent event,

Doors open in the Canal Court at 3pm and there are a limited amount of tickets remaining, which can be obtained by contacting Newry Muay Thai.
