Vernon wary of Westmeath wrath thumbnailCharlie Vernon maintains is authoritative position against Sligo on Sunday.

ARMAGH'S Charlie Vernon expects a backlash from Westmeath in what many believe will be their toughest test in Division Three on Sunday (February 4).

Armagh ended Westmeath's Championship in the Qualifiers last year in a physical game that spilled onto the stands, with fans fighting.

So Vernon rightly doesn't expect the Midlanders to roll out the red carpet.

"We are very much focused on the present and we want to get up to the highest division we can and play the best teams," said Vernon.

"This division is very competitive and we shouldn't be reading too much into today. We have Westmeath next and we put them out of the Championship and I know what it is like going to play at team that has put you out the Championship. The bit is between their teeth.

"There was more agro in the crowd than the pitch, but we know what is ahead of us and Westmeath are playing against the Dubs and Kildare in their side of the Championship, so they are playing quality sides in the Championship and they are a strong side with a strong squad and the truth be told if they had their shooting boots in that match last year they would have beaten us.

"So we will get our heads screwed on and as I said, not read too much into today."

Vernon has been playing in midfield this season and was impressed with Man of the Match Ethan Rafferty.

"He has had his ups and downs with injuries but he is a quality player and even the Kildare game last year we saw his big whopping score, I think they are still showing those highlights of that one," Vernon said laughing.

"But he definitely has that ability. I suppose what we want out of Ethan is for him to show that ability every day and that consistency."
