AFTER boxing like a true professional, to win the National Junior Cadets Championships on Saturday, James McGuinness has been selected to represent Ireland in the European Schoolboys Championships in Albena, Bulgaria in late May. It will be his first Irish vest.

It's a tremendous honour for the 14-year-old St Monica's boxer and so deserving. On Saturday at Dublin's National Stadium, the Omeath lad won that Irish honour when he gave the performance of his life to defeat Thomas King with a 3-2 scoreline.

James bravely went into the contest against the tricky Dublin southpaw, knowing that in the last two contests against King he had come out on the losing side - last year in the Irish Final and just three weeks ago, again in the Irish Final.

Though in that fight the St Monica's camp were of the opinion that their boxer was beaten by a controversial decision.

Coach Owen Murphy, who coaches James along with John McCoy, said James has trained hard over the past few weeks.

Owen told the Democrat: "We took James back to the drawing board and changed his tactics. And on the day everything went as planned with James winning the fight with his jab and with some straight backhands."

Owen continued: "James winning is a great boost to the St Monica's Club as we have three girls getting ready for Irish finals this weekend."

James got to the Irish Cadets final by defeating Donegal champion Dean Docherty 5-0 in the quarter-finals and then seeing off Mayo's Ciaran Bergin with a 4-1 scoreline in the semi-final.

Coach John McCoy was delighted with his young charge as he said: James is a great lad to work with and he's an absolute credit to the St Monica's Club."

In preparation for the European Championships James will train in Dublin's National Stadium with the Irish High Performance squad for the next few weeks.
