Smyth sizzles in stableford sunshine

Tuesday, 8 May 2018

WITH the best weather of the year and the spring time finally arriving it was Phillip Smyth who rose to the fore with a cracking 42 points in the May stableford.
With 3 pars in the first 5 Phillip turned it up a notch when he birdied the 6th. Three more bogeys to the turn ensured he had a great front nine with 22 points to the turn.
With another bogey to start his back 9 Philip parred 11th. However, it was the run of pars on the 15th 16th and 17th that really saw him home as he was able to take victory by two clear shots to book his place in this year's champion of champions.
In 2nd place with 40 points was Dermot Rice. After parring the 1st Dermot had a nasty triple bogey at the 2nd.
However, he replied brilliantly as he parred four in a row from the 4th to the 7th. A back nine of only four over par, which included 6 pars, helped him to the runners up spot on this occasion.
Taking the final podium spot was a lot closer to decide as non other than four players returned 38 points.
After the count back rule sorted it out it was John Brown who was decided to have the better of the back nine.
It was a birdie and four pars on the way home that helped him onto the podium over the rest of the field.
Twos competition
This week saw only four twos returned from the field with the already mentioned winner taking one.
The others were John Brown at the 11th and Raymond Fegan at the 4th to name a few.
