Minors are Down and out

Tuesday, 22 May 2018

DOWN exited the Electric Ireland Minor Football Championships to Monaghan following extra time in a riveting clash at Omagh's Healy Park on Sunday.

Down Minors ...1-16
Monaghan Minors ...1-20

But James McCartan's youngsters will be kicking themselves as they seemed set for victory. Indeed with 20 minutes of normal time left, they led by six points.

However, the Farneymen battled bravely to bring the match into extra time. And even in that extra time the sides were locked together. But Monaghan did the business at the death to stay in the All Ireland Championships.

Ryan Connolly was Down's top marksman on the day and he grabbed a fine tally of six points, four of them from play while Sheelan Johnston knocked over the Monaghan bar three times.

The Mourne youngsters led 0-6 to 0-3 at the break and things were looking really good when 10 minutes into the second half Tom Smyth set up Anthony Morgan who netted slickly to put Down six points in front.

However, Monaghan, with the returning Aaron Mulligan top-scoring with seven points, then took control of the second 30 minutes. And in fact it needed a late Connolly point to bring the game into extra time.

And although nothing divided the teams for long periods of extra time, Monaghan finished the stronger and thus stay in the competition with Down losing out.
