ALLEGATIONS of sexual abuse at Newry High School, which date back to the 1970s, are being investigated by the PSNI.

It is understood that complaints by two former pupils are under investigation.

In a statement released by the Education Authority on behalf of the school, a spokesperson said: “Newry High School understands that the PSNI is investigating historic abuse allegations which relate to a period several decades ago and not to any individual currently connected with the school.

“There is no suggestion of any current safeguarding concerns or issues in respect of Newry High School.

“In light of the ongoing police investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

Meanwhile a PSNI spokesperson added: “Police have received a report alleging historic abuse and detectives from Public Protection Branch are currently investigating. There are no further details at present.”
