THREE south Armagh kickboxers will travel to Italy in September to compete in the World Kickboxing Championships.

Mullaghbawn duo Shauna McAnulty (13-years-old) and Fainche Kelly (14-years-old) and Sorcha Kelly aged 15 from Forkhill, qualified for the Irish Junior Kickboxing team in April when they were successful at the Irish National championships held in the City West Hotel, Dublin.

The girls are members of the North East Mugendo kickboxing clubs and train out of the Forkhill club.

Preparation for the World Championships consists of intense weekly training under coaches Desy Murphy and Natalie Bell. As part of their preparation, they also attend monthly squad training in Dublin.

Coach Natalie Bell will be travelling with the girls to the world championships and will be their main mentor/coach for the duration of the championships.

To help with the girls with the cost of the trip and training North East Mugendo are organising a number of fundraising events in the coming months.

This kicks off with a Bake Sale at Newry's Buttercrane Shopping Centre on Saturday (June 30), then the next day on Sunday (July 1) there is a sponsored walk up Slieve Gullion. Later in the summer there is a Quiz Night in Newry's Canal Court Hotel on Thursday, August 30.

Team coach Desy Murphy said: “Any support at these fundraising events would be greatly appreciated.”

North East Mugendo holds kickboxing classes in Forkhill community centre, Abbey Grammar School Newry and St Pat's Community Centre in Lordship, Co Louth.
