A WOMAN in her 80s was hospitalised after three thugs terrorised her in her own home.

The woman, named locally as 89-year-old Rose Connolly, was traumatised and in shock after her ordeal on Thursday night.

Three men broke into her home in the Forkhill Road area of Newry at around 11.20pm on June 17. It’s understood the men gained access through the kitchen window.

They made Ms Connolly, who lives alone, sit in a chair while they searched her house, before fleeing with a small sum of money. One of the men pulled the phone from the wall as he left.

Slieve Gullion councillor Packie McDonald (pictured) said the community is disgusted and angry.

“This was a particularly nasty and cowardly attack on an elderly and clearly vulnerable woman who lives alone,” said Mr McDonald.

“It’s my understanding that the thieves – who I’m told weren’t wearing masks – were not only threatening, but also violent, at one stage throwing the woman to the ground.

“Although the lady wasn’t injured she has been left very shaken up and had to be hospitalised in the immediate aftermath of the robbery.

“I find it very sad that someone like this lady could be picked on for such a cruel and aggressive invasion of her home and life.

“I doubt the three men responsible have any idea of the damage they’ve done – they’ve destroyed someone’s life and for what gain?

“The little bit of money she had saved up for oil? They’re cowards and they’re a disgrace.

“I would urge neighbours of the lady – and indeed of any vulnerable people – to keep an extra vigilant eye out and do whatever they can to help.”

Detectives in Newry are appealing for information about the burglary and are asking anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Forkhill Road area on Thursday night or who has any information regarding the burglary is asked to contact detectives at Newry CID on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively information can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
