IT was a terrible weekend for Armagh football with the seniors being dumped out of the championship by Dublin on Saturday and then the Armagh Minors suffering a heavy defeat on Sunday.

The only bright thing is that the Minors have another game and they will be hurting and hopefully they can regroup and get ready for Cork.

On Saturday, Dublin were there for the taking and we failed to do the simple things right to beat them, and that is disappointing.

But overall if you were writing a school report on Paddy O'Rourke's first term in charge of Armagh it would read: Satisfactory year.

The team isn't set up to win a championship but the fact the Orchard County is playing Division One football next season is a positive.

All O'Rourke has to do is build on that because next year we will be playing against better teams and then hopefully we will have a better side ready for the rigours of the Championship.

But it is important that we find a few new players. We need to start doing what other teams are doing and play forwards among the forward lines, and replace the workmanlike attitude with footballers.

O'Rourke certainly hasn't been a disaster and I wouldn't be calling for his head, but he has done OK so far and next year we will be looking for him to push on.

Paddy has a tough task of unearthing a few new players but then last year's AllIreland winning Minor players could be ready for the step up for senior ranks.

And that is where training coach Mike McGurn must come in. He should be setting out strength and conditioning course for the young lads and for players such as Jamie Clarke and Franny Hanratty so they can be that bit physically stronger by the team the McKenna Cup comes around next January.

We shouldn't be waiting until the New Year to start training these boys and let's hope that there is a training programme for the lads to complete, as Mike McGurn has to earn his crust.

Against Dublin, we repeatedly carried possession into the tackles, with Finnian Moriarty, Paul Duffy and Charlie Vernon the biggest culprits and it was very frustrating because the Dublin lads were physically bigger and stronger.

I suppose we have to realise we aren't a complete enough team to be classed in the same group as Tyrone or Monaghan, and it will take time for Armagh to get there.

But not too long, because if Armagh can find players that can cause a threat up front then we have making of a side that can challenge for honours.
