Billy's bit

THE few days of summer weather had everyone in great spirits, especially those who take to the water with the skis from the East Coast Adventure Centre in great demand.

Some of the young folk trying the craft are really enthusiastic about the set up.

Along the beach, dozens of people were swimming, and now I realise what Warrenpoint Chamber is on about, with thoughtless dog owners allowing their pets to foul the beach.

In fact I was shocked to learn that a young lady from California walking in her bare feet found herself plastered.

I know for a fact she was not impressed. So can the council get someone on the job and prosecute all offenders without exception. Is it any wonder we can’t get a blue flag?

In California no dogs are allowed on the beaches and now smoking is to be banned there.

And surprise, surprise the big pothole at the top of Charlotte Street has been filled in, but I wonder how long until it is as bad as ever.

Maybe some morning we will hear that the hole has swallowed Thomas Street.

This time of year sees the school sports days usually in damp weather, but this year the story was entirely different with all of the schools getting beautiful sunshine and the ground bone dry.

So everyone had a great time away from class.

St Patrick’s Church, Mayobridge, was packed on Saturday for the six o’clock mass with rumours of an historic announcement.

It certainly lived up to the promise as the sisters of St Clare, who have now left Mayobridge to live in the new convent in Newry, formally presented the deeds to Fr Charles Byrne for the parish of St Patrick’s.

Indeed the roof of the church nearly lifted with the applause.

After the Mass everyone was invited to the convent grounds to witness the formal handover of the huge key which seemed to dazzle all present, so well was it polished, truly a red letter day for the bridge.

The popular Ryan’s Discount Shop in Duke Street is all set to move to Rostrevor where it is hoped to be open for business for the Rostrevor Festival.

It’s not the opposition from Around A Pound as the owners are completely satisfied with the trade.

I understand the lease on the premises expires at the end of July.

However, to the proprietor Joe Ryan good luck on your transfer, Warrenpoint’s loss is Rostrevor’s gain.
