Billy's bit

THE Boley Fair in Hilltown got off to a wet start and with pouring rain and umbrellas the order of the day.

However, it did not deter a record crowd turning up to watch the spectacular scenes from yesteryear.

Indeed, Hilltown must be proud of its citizens most of whom had a hand in the preparations. On this 25th year all the previous chair people with a few exceptions were on the openair stage to receive a gift each to commemorate the occasion.

Saturday was also a bad day for outdoor events but Sunday until Tuesday was ideal with huge crowds enjoying the fun of the fair.

Wouldn’t it be just great if other towns and villages did the same and supported their festival instead of throwing obstacles in the way?

With the July holidays in full swing the ’Point got its fair share of heavy traffic and full-up restaurants.

It’s good to know the town has a great name for it’s excellent eating houses.

In most cases the service is speedy and excellent as well.

It was great to see the Cystic Fibrosis breakfast morning in the Pastoral Centre last week having a bumper morning with £2236.58 being raised for Alan Ward and Cherry Tree House.

Organiser Geraldine Spiers and friends are to be congratulated on their Trojan work. Geraldine would like to thank all those who helped or supported the morning including the traders in Warrenpoint and Newry for their generosity with a special thank you to Jacinta Magee, Eden Beauty Newry, who raised £300 in her coffee morning.

The Fiddler’s Green Festival will be under way when you read these notes.

But hopefully the good weather will have come back to help make it the usual great week.

This year many events are planned and big international stars are all set to put in an appearance.

I’m told the programme is just full of events so all that is required is big crowds and fine weather.

See you there.

It’s great to see the Warrenpoint / Omeath ferry back in operation.

The M/V Seascapes owned by Brendan O’Neill is once again on the high seas between Warrenpoint and Omeath from 11.30am until 6pm daily until September.

A trip to the far side will surely bring back many happy memories for hundreds of long ago passengers on the old Red Star boats.

The boat was specially built for the Lough but with red tape could not land in Omeath until recently.

Now it is a great success with all mod cons on board.

The boat operates a bay and harbour cruise and a Narrow Water Castle cruise.

Full details can be obtained from the owner on 0284175 3425 or 07815466498.

Looking at TV scenes of the riots in Belfast and other places, I thought how lucky we are to live in a town like this one.

Everyone gets along with his neighbour no matter what his politics are, for that we are thankful.

There were only three runners-up in last week’s INF Lotto: PJ Gribben, N McGuinness and R McVerry.

The sudden death of Ainé Killen has shocked the entire district and sincere sympathy goes to her family.

The death has also occurred of William McCormick, Mourne Drive. Sincere condolences to all of his family.
