Billy's bit

THE blood transfusion service has organised a donation session in Warrenpoint Town Hall today, Tuesday July 27, at 2-4pm and 5.30 – 8pm.

As everyone should know, every donation is a possible lifesaver and the demand is huge. All existing donors are urgently requested to attend and bring any friends. Why not go along?

Last week there was an outbreak of vandalism with the burning of a Ford Transit van at Marine Parade.

The fire brigade put it out but not before extensive damage was caused.

All of this happened right under a CCTV camera, when I passed the place a couple of days before the camera was pointed over to Omeath.

There is little sense in ratepayers forking out for a service that is not there. The sooner they go, the better.

Fiddler’s Green Festival got off to a decent start on Sunday despite the rain. An interesting event on Monday was a film premiere in Harmony Hall.

The Day Diplomacy Died was all about the imprisonment of 75 dissidents in Cuba, which caused an international outcry.

The director Bernie Dyer introduced the 33 minute film.

He is a journalist on Havana Radio and well-known in Cuba.

Mayor of Newry and Mourne Mick Murphy was introduced by festival chairman Eamon O’Connor who welcomed Mick on his home ground.

The mayor welcomed all those who had made the journey from all over Europe, USA and as far away as China and then declared the festival well and truly opened.

On Sunday (August 1) the Maiden of Mourne Festival begins with the usual parade of floats.

This year several local towns have maidens entered in the competition.

With the brand new committee we should see many new events in the 21st year of the festival.

Of course, all festivals must have the support of the community and hopefully we will not hear any critics.

A big surprise was planned but in recent days the news has arrived that the Red Arrows are not coming as they are tied up in Newcastle.

Hopefully, next year we might see the famous team in the skies around Carlingford Lough.

I have seen them in England and at the Galway Air Show several times and they certainly are a treat.

Last week’s INF Lotto draw failed to find a winner. There were five cards with three numbers: O Rice, B Bird, C Carr, C Rice and P McShane.

Members of the McCormack family travelled from USA and Canada for the funeral of Billy who died last week.

There was a steady stream of friends and neighbours calling at his Mourne Drive home to pay their respects to a well loved and respected man.

The church was packed for Requiem Mass and his funeral took place at St Mary’s Cemetery, Burren.

Sincere sympathy to Anne and the entire family circle.
